Working With Our Relatives
Our vision and work depend on strong relationships and tradition. We work together, build consensus, and listen to our community. That foundation allows us to show up and invest in the issues they have identified as important. We couldn’t do our work without the vital partnerships we’ve made. Other Native and Latino nonprofits, Tribal Nations, local, state and federal government agencies, and philanthropy organizations have all partnered with us to serve San Francisco’s 18,000 Native peoples. This relational approach to identifying and meeting our community’s needs is Indigenous wisdom in action.

Yurok Partnership

The Village SF is the result of Indigenous people creating solutions and opportunities for Indigenous people. But we can’t do it alone… Urban Indian services have been underfunded for too long.”

The Village SF initiative includes a partnership with the Yurok Tribe as they build a rural residential treatment center that will follow Friendship House’s treatment model. The Yurok-Friendship House partnership will create a network of treatment support from the city to rural Native communities. “Today’s announcement that Friendship House will receive $500,000 from the EPA to support a dedicated gardening, ceremonial and workforce development space for San Francisco’s 18,000 Native peoples is exciting news. This federal funding will ensure the Village SF’s Indigenous Community Garden is a place that promotes climate justice, culture and community building for Native peoples in San Francisco. It was my privilege to secure $750,000 in Community Project Funding for the Village SF last year, and I’m pleased that this important project has now received more support to promote cultural connections in our City.”
